DreamHost vs. Amazon S3

Ok, I wasn’t planning on blogging anything about DreamHost for a while, but last month, “DreamHost”:http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?73901 made their hosting so much more attractive: They doubled their bandwith, and “multiplied disk space by a factor of ten”:http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/V8.09_September_2006.
Joseph Scott “compared the DreamHost prices to Amazon S3”:http://joseph.randomnetworks.com/archives/2006/10/03/amazon-s3-vs-dreamhost/ — the short story is: If you’re going to be storing large amounts of data, DreamHost wins hands down on price: The most basic of DreamHost plans, level 1, gives you 200GB of storage, and 2TB of monthly transfer for $9.95/month. Go with Amazon, and you’ll have to shell out $430/month to be allowed to store and transfer the same amount of data.
Add to it that DreamHost has regular FTP (SFTP) access, shell access, and perhaps the best of all: Subversion repositories, and the solution should be just that more tempting for the end-user.
If you think $9.95 is too expensive per month, my “Dreamhost promo code”:http://virtuelvis.com/archives/2005/10/dreamhost-discount ‘dirtcheap’ still gives you a $79 discount on your first payment if you sign up for any of the plans with yearly or bi-yearly billing. Going for the Level 1 plan brings the cost to $3.37/month the first year, or $40.40 in total.

I don’t want to sound like an “AOL user”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AOL#Usenet_newsgroups here, but I don’t have much more to contribute with than “I agree”. So: I agree. Totally. Dreamhost, besides the fact that they don’t host in and from Norway, is the best web host I’ve ever used.

I just signed up 🙂 Been looking for a host for some while.

  3. You have been talking about it so many times now that I finaly listened to you. While moving between countries I forgot to renew my “contract” with my old host. And found out I could just as well try an other one.
But of course the day I wanted to sign up, dreamhost.com was down. Bad sign, mabye, mayby not. Anyway, I used the link on your page and the keyword you mentioned, and been up since. Well my page is still not ported 100% properly, might be some links still not working, but I have no complaints about the host.
