The 2005 makeover
2004-12-06 00:13
I’m finally beginning to see the end of the 2005 makeover. While the visuals have changed, most of the changes are those you don’t see: The templates have, unlike with earlier redesigns been almost totally reworked.
Running into brick walls
2004-11-16 10:50
I’ve just run into some sort of brick wall, design-wise when doing the 2005 makeover here.
The brick wall I’m running into is regarding categories. Since Movable Type doesn’t support category hierarchies by default (I am aware of plugins that may take care of this, but I’m reluctant to install yet another plugin), I have treated the categories as a stricter cousin of keywords, and have 20 categories, as evident from the archive index - some almost empty, while others contain more than their fair share of entries.
So, instead of repeatedly running into this brick wall, I’m going to ask you:
- Do you use the category archives?
- If so, do you like the way I’ve categorized?
- If you don’t use the category archives: Why not?
- If you use the category archives, but don’t like them: Why not?
- Would you prefer more categories, or would you prefer fewer?
2005 Preview

I’m currently in the process of doing the 2005 makeover of virtuelvis.com and I have chosen to reveal it at an early stage. There are a number of new features in the 2005 makeover:
Design philosophy

I just got a mail from Chris, who likes my site, and asks the following question:
Just wondering did you ever write something about how you built your site? I could figure it out by studying your CSS, but I thought perhaps you have already made it easy by writing something up about it. Thanks.
His question aligns nicely with the piece I was about to write, so I’m going to answer Chris’ question in some detail before I write my other piece.
Don't smoke Verdana!

Verdana is very popular at the “I-can-read-4px-fonts school of web designers”. That is because Verdana is pretty, and it’s legible even at fairly small sizes.
Still, I hate it, and you should avoid it. I’ve prepared nine screenshots to show you why.

High-resolution displays are eventually going to force clueless web designers to create fluid layouts instead of being pixel terrorists.
