Opera Mini

Today, Opera Software released Opera Mini — Opera Mini is Opera running on any device that supports both GPRS and J2ME.

This enables Opera to run on low-end devices that previously has only typically had a WML/WAP-browser. In other words: Full Internet access on almost any phone.

Client/Server

Opera Mini is based on two components. First, there is the client component, which is a J2ME application users can download and install on their phones.

Secondly, and more importantly, there is the server component. When accessing the web with Opera Mini, the server component, which uses Opera’s Small Screen Rendering technology, converts the pages to OBML, Opera Binary Markup Language, and sends the OBML to the client which in turns renders it in just the same way it would have been rendered on a regular version of Opera.

Availability

Currently, Opera Mini is being offered to Norwegian users in a pilot project with Norwegian TV2. Norwegian users that want to test Opera Mini can do so by sending the text Opera to 1984.

to 1984? Like in Orwell’s 1984, Big Brother is Watching where you surf and all? (((c:= They absolutely have a sense of humour.

Or you send an SMS to 1984, the past. But then again, you get future technology. So it’s “Back to the future!” or so. Boy. They couldn’t have chosen a better number!

WildEnte, did anyone ever tell you that you are a strange one?

im in england and i cant get opera mini :( im using orange k700i help me please, y do u withhold the URL??

The URL is rather pointless unless you live in Norway, since Opera Mini is really only available in Norway for now.

I hope that Opera Software ASA will sign deals with more operators and content providers, so that it will also be made available in other countries.

Chris: I am, hopefully for obvious reasons, unable to comment further on any specifics of OBML.
