Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion.

Yea. Whoah. But after thinking a bit about it, I can only see this as a positive move. Adobe already has a lot of experience in the vector graphics area with Adobe SVG Viewer and Acrobat (PDF) and hopefully they can push Flash in the right direction and move it away from the proprietary SWF format and over to an open format like SVG.

It’s still extremely early to start speculating in what Adobe will do, of course, but I’ve always maintaned an a lot more positive impression of Adobe’s work than Macromedia’s. I don’t know what affect this will have upon Macromedia’s product portfolio, but I hope it means a convergence with Adobe’s product portfolio plus a move to more open formats and standards compliance.
