How do you pronounce quark?

In general, when you want the pronounciation for a word, it’s a good thing to check with a dictionary.

Merriam-Webster Online is an excellent online dictionary, which also includes audio samples of words, and for the word quark, it says:

Pronunciation: ‘kwork, ‘kwärk

Kwork, as any other pronunciation would be silly.

The name quark was coined by Murray Gell-Man, from a line in James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake: “Three quarks for Muster Mark”. Although Joyce appears to have meant it to be pronounced as it is spelt, physicists (for reasons unknown) pronounce it to rhyme with fork.
