404 and 410
Getting enough inspiriation to do this took some time, but finally: I now treat HTTP errors 404 and 410 differently, and I have created custom error pages. With inspiration from this old diveintomark piece. Take a look:
To ease maintenance of these custom errors, they are created as index templates.

Why not implement an automatic mail send trigger if referrer is from your own site, thus knowing that there must be a link somewhere?
